Lions Clubs Host Heartwarming Deepavali Celebration for Special Olympics Athletes at Chitta Mall


Citta Mall, Sunday, 27 October 2024 — In celebration of Deepavali, a collaborative effort by 13 Lions Clubs in the area brightened the day for Special Olympics athletes and their families. Hosted at Chitta Mall, the event included a festive buffet lunch, thrilling rides in a convoy of vintage and modern Volkswagen Beetles, and gift presentations for the attendees.

Organized by the Lions Clubs of Sunway Damansara Metro, Banting, Subang Jaya, Seri Kuala Langat, Selangor Dynasty, Petaling Jaya, Petaling Jaya Mutiara, Selangor Empire, Cyberjaya Blue Ocean, Selangor Classic, Petaling Jaya Metro, Selangor Majestic, and Tropicana Elite, the celebration provided a meaningful Deepavali experience for the athletes and their families, embodying the Lions Clubs’ commitment in supporting diverse communities.

The festivities commenced with a vibrant buffet lunch, where athletes and their families enjoyed traditional and festive dishes amidst a lively atmosphere. Following the meal, the guests were invited to join a memorable convoy ride, experiencing the charm of classic and modern Volkswagen Beetles and vans that added an extra touch of excitement to the day.


In a generous gesture, Leaders of Lions Club presented each athlete with a goodie bag and an 'Ang Pao,' sharing the joy of Deepavali with heartfelt tokens of appreciation.

At the crack of dawn today, nearly 70 athletes from Special Olympics Selangor, accompanied by their parents and pacers, enthusiastically participated in the corporate Fun Run organized by the Top Glove Foundation.


This event truly embodies inclusivity, showcasing a remarkable moment where individuals from diverse backgrounds unite. The morning serves as a powerful testament to raising awareness, breaking down societal divisions, and providing an equal playing field for individuals with intellectual disabilities.


In this race, where both Special Olympics participants and Top Glove corporate staff come together, our people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to shine brightly.

Special Olympics Malaysia (SOM) is not only about sports. It recognizes that  other aspects of an ID athlete’s life - their health, wellbeing, and social inclusion are important contributors to their performance on the playing field, and off the playing field. When you look at the Special Olympics logo, it seems to reflect how important a support ecosystem is to an athlete (the biggest figure with outstretched arms) and their health, wellbeing, and happiness.

Support My Independent Living Enterprise

Special Olympics has developed programs like the Athlete Leadership (AL) program, with this vital support ecosystem in mind as well.  AL looks at developing high-function ID athletes in areas beyond just sports and acknowledges  the role of mentors in helping elevate ID athletes’ skills and roles in SO and the community.


One such achievement belongs to Miao Qing, a SO Selangor Athlete who took part in Track & Field in the recent Selangor State Games, and also likes to play bocce, bowling, and table tennis.


He was recently awarded a small start-up funding by the Young Raja of Selangor to kick-start his project SMILE, which stands for “Support My Independent Living Enterprise” a convenience store called SMILE mini store, which you can find out more about here.

To date, he has a collaboration to sell assorted local chips under the BondaG brand, as well as sell DeXandra and Sugarbomb products.

SO Selangor is pleased to host the National Director of Special Olympics Maldives Ms Fathimath Fairooza Adam to visit the Table Tennis training conducted by SO Selangor.


Ms Fathimath mingled with some parents at the centre and even tried tried her hands to play a short round of rally with the two parents coaches. Thank you for visiting us and we wish SO Maldives the very best in the SO movements.

“Coaching special needs children with intellectual disabilities is indeed a challenging and an arduous task” says Connie Yee, a mother of Special needs child.


“Coaching special needs children with intellectual disabilities is indeed a challenging and an arduous task” says Connie Yee, mother of Teik Kean, 23 years old. “We are required to have limitless patience, appropriate skills, and the ability to adapt to the erratic moods and the ever-evolving behaviour of our children, so that we can continuously engage and encourage them to grow” she continues.


Recently, Connie and Teik Kean took part in the 2-day virtual table tennis session conducted by Ms Lua Bee Yueh, SOAP Regional Sports Advisor for Table Tennis. Training at the start was challenging as the table tennis ball is “quite small, light, and bounces a little too easily!” Connie had to be innovative to create different exercises for Teik Kean to do. To his credit, diligent practice paid off and after two weeks, and some frustration, Teik Kean could serve the ball to the opponent and enjoy a few rallies with his mum.  “I am very proud of how far he has come and his willingness to learn” says Connie.

On 21 July 2019, the annual Unified Bowling Game under Special Olympics Selangor is held at Wangsa Bowl in IOI City Mall, Putrajaya where athletes with intellectual disabilities are joined by family members, Unified partners, sponsors and volunteers to compete and display the sporting spirit of the Special Olympics motto, which is "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

This year, more than 280 bowlers representing their respective organizations, charities and sponsors, out of which, 105 are athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Unified Bowling Game celebrates the vision of a person, Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) who saw the importance of sports in building confidence and discovering potential and also providing opportunities for greater inclusion and interaction with typical young people. This day is dedicated to her vision and named the Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day.

Our guest of honour is YB Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development and she is giving away the prizes for the top 3 teams. This annual bowling event, the forth in the series organised by Special Olympics Selangor since 2016.


Today’s unified bowling game has athletes from Special Olympics Selangor, six (6) Program Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK), Selangor and Federal Territory Association For The Mentally Handicapped (SAMH), Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang Selangor (PKIK) and unified partners from our sponsors Dato YL Chung, Neo & Partners, Joseph Chambers, Selangor Bar Committee, Sri Ternak Group of Companies, CSTrade Marketing Sdn Bhd, JF Finex Sdn Bhd, Nuri Low, Sandra Raj, otter Lim and Wayne Chan.

On Saturday 25 May, in celebrating Allianz Charity Day, one of its agencies, Financial Excellence (Finex) invited athletes of Special Olympics Selangor (SOSgor) and parents for a morning of self expression through, a workshop for parents and, expression through painting for the athletes, under the theme, "Our Story".

While staff of Finex guided and stayed with the athletes in an adjoining room, parents were given the opportunity to share their journey, challenges, opportunities and hope for their children.

Finex, Managing Director, Jay Foo, then gave an educational talk about the advantages of setting up a trust for people with special needs. Understanding rightly that, one of the main concerns of most parents would be the future of their children with special needs when they passed on.

In retrospect, more time should be given to this topic and to add time for a Q&A session.


Meanwhile, the athletes were divided into 8 groups and came up with 8 great abstract expressionist paintings. The bold strokes and colours are actually a reflection of the courage and innocence of every athlete in the room.


The paintings will be auctioned off and money generated to be donated to Special Olympics Selangor.

Well done athletes and parents.

It was a bright sunny Friday, 12th April morning and the Special Olympics athletes were far away from their normal bowling alley, instead, they were gathered at Taman Persektutuan Bukit Rimba waiting for the start of the "Walk The World" (WTW) event organized by Informa, a multinational event and publishing company, which has offices in 43 countries.


The event started off with a photo session before a zumba warm-up which had everyone shaking, stretching and swinging to an upbeat music. 

The athletes, parents and staff of Informa were divided into 8 teams with a mission to complete a 5KM walk along chosen routes in the park. Beside completing the 5 KM walk, the groups also had to hunt for chosen locations and group photographs taken as proofs. WTW is a global Corporate Social Responsibility event initiated by Informa, in which the company pledged to donate money; an amount to be calculated based on a minimum 5 KM walk multiplied by the number of participants; to charities of choice by the local offices. So, more participants mean more money. And it is really nice to know that the athletes sweated out the 5KM to earn money for their organization.


The staff from Informa, together with their suppliers and vendors did a wonderful job keeping the spirit up throughout the walk, encouraging the athletes and the parents in the walk. The routes were well-paved and scenic, with the occasional monkeys making their appearances.


After all the teams have completed the walk, everyone was treated to a fulfilling and well-deserved lunch. It was a great outing for the athletes of Special Olympics Selangor, as they walked out of the park, happily hugging their new T-shirts and water bottles. They know that they have done a good job.

Special Olympics Malaysia is pleased to be represented at the Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan by Special Olympics Youth Leader, Sky. Inspired by her experiences on the playing field as a Special Olympics athlete and her experiences as a leader and self-advocate, Sky is driven to empower other young individuals with intellectual disabilities in her community. Sky is looking forward to the Forum and the opportunity to “learn and meet lots of friends” from around the world who share her passion.


After the Forum, Sky will return to Malaysia to lead her project a self-advocacy workshop for Special Olympics athletes in Malaysia. This workshop will provide training in the leadership skills critical to being an effective self-advocate. Participants in the workshop will come away with a stronger skill set to be able to be to speak up, make choices, and influence greater change within their communities in Malaysia. Sky will travel to Baku and have the opportunity to join a cohort of global youth leaders, educators, and program staff equally passionate about fostering a more inclusive world and will return home to Malaysia to make this a reality.
