Allianz Charity Day "Paint Our Story"

On Saturday 25 May, in celebrating Allianz Charity Day, one of its agencies, Financial Excellence (Finex) invited athletes of Special Olympics Selangor (SOSgor) and parents for a morning of self expression through, a workshop for parents and, expression through painting for the athletes, under the theme, "Our Story".

While staff of Finex guided and stayed with the athletes in an adjoining room, parents were given the opportunity to share their journey, challenges, opportunities and hope for their children.

Finex, Managing Director, Jay Foo, then gave an educational talk about the advantages of setting up a trust for people with special needs. Understanding rightly that, one of the main concerns of most parents would be the future of their children with special needs when they passed on.

In retrospect, more time should be given to this topic and to add time for a Q&A session.

Meanwhile, the athletes were divided into 8 groups and came up with 8 great abstract expressionist paintings. The bold strokes and colours are actually a reflection of the courage and innocence of every athlete in the room.

The paintings will be auctioned off and money generated to be donated to Special Olympics Selangor.

Unified Bowling in conjunction with Eunice Kennedy Shriver's (EKS) DAY

On 21 July 2019, the annual Unified Bowling Game under Special Olympics Selangor is held at Wangsa Bowl in IOI City Mall, Putrajaya where athletes with intellectual disabilities are joined by family members, Unified partners, sponsors and volunteers to compete and display the sporting spirit of the Special Olympics motto, which is "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

This year, more than 280 bowlers representing their respective organizations, charities and sponsors, out of which, 105 are athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Unified Bowling Game celebrates the vision of a person, Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) who saw the importance of sports in building confidence and discovering potential and also providing opportunities for greater inclusion and interaction with typical young people. This day is dedicated to her vision and named the Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Day.

Our guest of honour is YB Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development and she is giving away the prizes for the top 3 teams. This annual bowling event, the forth in the series organised by Special Olympics Selangor since 2016.

Today’s unified bowling game has athletes from Special Olympics Selangor, six (6) Program Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK), Selangor and Federal Territory Association For The Mentally Handicapped (SAMH), Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang Selangor (PKIK) and unified partners from our sponsors Dato YL Chung, Neo & Partners, Joseph Chambers, Selangor Bar Committee, Sri Ternak Group of Companies, CSTrade Marketing Sdn Bhd, JF Finex Sdn Bhd, Nuri Low, Sandra Raj, otter Lim and Wayne Chan.

Strike Out Differences - Autism Embrace Bowling Tournament

Special Olympics Selangor Athletes and National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM)had a striking time at a bowling tournament organized by YEDP11A, a subsidiary of TNB. The tournament held on the Saturday, 16 March 2019 was a collaboration between NASOM and project team YEDP11A. The theme was "Strike Out Difference, Autism Embrace".

The day truly echoed the theme as staff from ILSAS and the project team gamely volunteered to partner the athletes in a competitive tournament. Throughout the tournament, teams comprising three athletes with autism and one volunteer, battled out on the lanes. Whoops, Aaahs and Yeahs reverberated against the downing of pins.

Puan Noor Hafiza Binti Hamid, a trainer from ILSAS and team-mates comprising Peggy, Andrew and Nicholas of Team 5 encouraged athletes from her team with hi-fives and claps, while doing not too badly herself. She was happy and said that she truly enjoyed herself and even got some bowling tips from her team-mates.

In the above 15 category, SOSgor athletes, Tan Seng Kit, David Foo and Clement Ooi emerged individual Champion, runner-up and third respectively. In the team events, the Champion team had Seng Kit, David Foo and Zen Lee from SOSgor who partnered En. Jahid, Senior Leadership Consultant of ILSAS, second place team had Clement Ooi (United Voice), Hakimi and Kean Ann (both from NASOM) and third placed team had Samuel Chok, Tee Hong Guan and Chuan Teik Kean from SOSgor.

It was a good outing for SOSgor athletes.

Altogether there were 20 teams, 9 teams from ages 15 above and 11 teams from ages 15 below. At the end of the day, anxieties and emotions gave way to shouts and cheers as all athletes received their medals.
