What is Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is a global movement of people creating a new world of inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. We are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place—one athlete, one volunteer, one family member at a time.
Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Special Olympics International is the world’s largest amateur sports organization with more than three million athletes in over 201 countries.
Our Mission
is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship, other SO athletes and the community.
Our Goal
is to help any persons with ID in Selangor to develop their potential and to become useful and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities.
Why get involved with us?
Family Support
Facilitate family engagement among siblings, coaches, volunteers, and community families by acknowledging athletes’ abilities and encouraging participation in social events, sports competitions, and family-oriented activities.
The family remains a fundamental part of the Movement, offering vital support to athletes throughout training and competitive events.
Athlete
Enhance physical fitness, motor skills development, self-confidence, and self-esteem, while building friendships and family support.
Access free year-round coaching in various Olympic-style sports such as athletics, bocce, bowling, and football, and compete at state and national levels, with opportunities to represent your state in Special Olympics Malaysia and international events.
Volunteer
Volunteers play a crucial role in our community, contributing in many ways to support our athletes and events. Among them is the local coach, who dedicates significant time each week to work closely with athletes, guiding and encouraging them to achieve their best.
In addition to coaching, volunteers are essential in organizing, planning, and running our local events. Their commitment ensures that every detail is managed efficiently.
Partners
Our partners are instrumental in securing funding for our movement, enabling us to expand our outreach to additional families and individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through their dedicated support and advocacy, we are able to develop new programs, enhance existing services, and reach communities that previously lacked access to critical resources. Their collaboration not only helps us raise essential financial contributions but also strengthens our ability to create lasting change and promote inclusion. By working together, we can empower more families, foster greater awareness, and ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities receive the opportunities and assistance they deserve.
